FEMopt Studios GmbH – Experts in Structural Optimization

The FEMopt Studios GmbH supports their customers with design and optimization of structural components and with analysis and optimization know-how during the design process. The support is based on our analysis and optimization software package XCARAT, which can be also licensed to you. This software allows for a couple of different structural analysis methods as well as optimization of structural components during the design process. Besides the standard optimization goals like stress or mass minimization, XCARAT also contains methods for dynamic optimization like reduction of body sound emission. The open Python interface allows for customer specific solutions and modifications. Our experience in software design and development is applied by a couple of customers in their in-house software development projects.

Optimization Software XCARAT

The optimization software XCARAT contains a broad spectrum of optimization methods in order to maximize the performance of your products. By these methods you can develop an optimal design during all steps of the product design process. You have the choice between shape, bead, topology, or sizing optimization and many different optimization goals like strength, stress, mass, modal or acoustic optimization. Customer specific objectives and workflows can be easily implemented by the open Python interface. Please find some XCARAT key features in the following list:

The parameter free shape optimization uses directly the FE-nodes as shape variables. This approach allows for a detection of optimal shapes with minimal modelling effort. It can also be used to gain an idea of required shape parameters for an effective CAD parametrization.
The mesh regularization is required to ensure robust and reliable FE-meshes during the whole optimization process. It is applied to 2-d and 3-d models in similar fashion. The nodal normal movement is controlled by the so-called Gradient Filter, while the tangential movement is governed by the Minimal Surface Regularization method.
The XCARAT Python interface can be used in two different ways. On the one hand it can control the whole solution and optimization process by an external process. On the other hand, it serves as interface for user specific local enhancements like material laws, objective functions, output methods, etc.

The XCARAT plug-in for Ansys provides a seamless integration of the XCARAT optimization solver in Ansys Mechanical. The whole functionality (sizing, shape and topology optimization) can be used. The whole modelling process as well as result data visualization is managed in Ansys Mechanical.

XCARAT can be integrated in many different workflows. Besides the Ansys plug-in also Siemens NX provides the possibility for a direct platform integration. Workflows governed by MSC Nastran or Abaqus can also be enhanced by the XCARAT optimization package using the XCARAT Workbench and the existing input and output interfaces. The result data visualization is done via the known post processors.

Project Partner

Besides many customers from different industries, we can also rely on a powerful network of universities and research labs. We constantly develop new algorithms and approaches in different research projects. The most promising approaches are then transferred to the XCARAT software for the application in customer projects.
